Calabria, Taras. Gold ¼ Stater (2.14 g), ca. 276-272 BC. Laureate head of Apollo right, with long hair; behind, AP monogram. Reverse: TAPANT[INΩN], eagle standing left on thunderbolt, wings spread; before, AP monogram. Fischer-Bossert G59g (O50/R59; this coin); Vlasto 49; SNG ANS 1043; HN Italy 986.

This rare gold ¼ stater dates to a relatively late phase of Tarentine history (281-272 BC) when King Pyrrhos of Epiros intervened in the affairs of southern Italy on behalf of the citizens in Sicily and ultimately abandoned his Tarentine allies who were obliged to come to terms with the Romans. During this troubled episode Tarentum was forced to reduce the weight of its silver didrachms from 7.9 grams and thereafter this standard was maintained until the cessation of regular issues, ca. 228 BC. The special issue of gold denominations at this time were doubtlessly associated with the need for larger sums of money during wartime.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Bruttium, Rhegion. Silver Tetradrachm (16.9g), ca. 425-420 BC. Lion's head facing; in right field, olive spray with leaf and olive. Reverse: PHΓI-N-O-Σ (retrograde), Iokastos seated left, holding kantharos and staff; below chair, coiled serpent; all within olive wreath. Herzfelder grp. III/2, 59 (D34/R49); BMC 14 (same dies); SNG Lloyd 684 (same rev. die); de Luynes 790 (same rev. die); HN Italy 2491. Very Rare. Uncleaned with original deep patination. Extremely Fine/ Very Fine.

Iokastos was one of six sons of Aiolos, the king of the winds who sent each of his sons west to carve their own domains out of the lands of Italy and Sicily, and was the mythic founder, or oikistes, of Rhegion. He reportedly died of snakebite, and it is the coiled serpent under the chair on this coin which originally led to the seated figure's identification as Iokastos. The olive spray in the obverse field and the enclosing olive wreath on the reverse refer to Rhegion's alliance with Athens during this period, when the city provided a base for the twenty triremes under the Athenian general Lachares, who was aiding the Leontinoi in their fight against Syracuse.

Just as the varied courts in Renaissance Italy supported artists and craftsmen in an effort to adorn their cities and outdo their rivals, the tyrants in fifth century Sicily did the same. Syracuse, being the most prosperous and powerful city in the west at this time was no exception, and with the constant need for coinage to pay for mercenaries to pursue its militaristic ambitions it is no wonder that there began a flowering of artistic expression in the city's coinage. The anonymous "Demareteion Master" and "Maestro della foglia" were followed by many fine artists such as Choirion, Euainetos, Eumenos, Exakestidas, Herakleidas, amongst others, who often proudly signed their work. These masters refined the expression in miniature of motion and life in new ways, breaking from the static molds of the Archaic period. On this coin, although the obverse die is unsigned, we can readily see the hand of the master Eukleidas, while the reverse prominently boasts the signature of Eumenos below the neck of Arethusa.

Thessaly, Larissa. Silver Drachm (6.1 g), ca. 370-360 BC. AΛ[EY] in small letters to right, head of Aleuas facing slightly left, wearing conical helmet; in right field, labrys. Reverse: [Λ]APIΣAIA, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, head turned to right; in left field in smaller letters, EΛΛA. Lorber 94 (same dies); BCD Thessaly II 185 (same dies). Choice Very Fine.

All known examples of this enigmatic coin type share the same dies, which indicates a specific reason for its issue. However, scholarly opinion is divided as to its purpose. Seeing a contraction of the name Hellokrates in the legend in the left field of the reverse, Seltman proposed that the depiction of Aleuas, the eponymous founder of Larissa's ruling house, the Aleuadae, promoted the claim of Hellokrates against Alexander of Pherai in 361 BC. A different interpretation was earlier proposed by M. Sordi, "La drachma di Aleuas e l'origine di un tipo monetario di Alessandro Magno," Annali 3 (1956), where he saw in the eagle reverse a connection to the eagle coinage of Alexander the Great (cf. Price pl. CXLIII), who upon his accession to the Macedonian Kingdom also became tagos of Thessaly. In the opinion of this cataloguer, weight should be given to Seltman's interpretation as the reverse design more closely resembles the very rare bronze coins of Philotas (see U. Wartenberg. "Philotas? A New Coinage from Macedonia," Essays Hersh, pp. 13-7), who was a tribal chieftain or king in the region of southern Macedon / northern Thessaly during the second quarter of the fourth century, and whose son, Parmenion, was a close confidant and general of Philip II of Macedon.
